Focus on... Helichrysum

Helichrysum, also known as Immortelle, is one of those almost miraculous healing plants, a very precious essential oil indeed. Part of the sunflower and daisy family, the leaves of the plant strongly of curry - I have one in my garden, and it is difficult to believe that it is the same shrub! Helichrysum gets its name from the Greek word helios, which means sun, and chrysos, which means gold. This description refers to the beautiful golden colour of the little flowers.

I have given this to my dad, who is on anticoagulants (medicines that help prevent blood clots). This means he bleeds very easily and profusely at the smallest cut, and applying helichrysum helps immensely and means he could stop using the steroid creams he had to apply frequently (please consult a physician before you decide to cut out any medicines you were prescribed).

Helichrysum’s emollient properties help to keep the skin hydrated and reduce the appearance of fine lines. With this reputation, Helichrysum is used in many anti-aging products, and can help target aging spots. In summer I add Helichrysum to my sun-screen to protect against UV rays, but it also works well with acne, eczema, psoriasis and other skin irritations. Add a drop to your facial moisturiser and turn applying it into a little ritual to work it’s magic:

Apply with gratitude for what mother earth provided to us, visualise your skin as rejuvenated and radiant in the golden sun.

If you are in need of spiritual support, then it can give strength and endurance to your wounded soul who must keep going. This oil always makes itself known to me when times are difficult and guides me like a warrior spirit into healing and transformation.

It blends well with Wintergreen and Lime, Myrrh, Frankincense and Lavender.
